Merlin: James Bradley loves ditching the armour

After a hard day on the set of Merlin, Bradley James loves nothing more than simply getting out of his armour.

"That's the best part of my day," jokes the 27-year-old who plays king-in-waiting Arthur.

"It means I start floating round the room and have this light feeling in my shoulders, which I haven't experienced since six o'clock in the morning. As cool as it looks, I'm always happy when it goes."

During the past three years, James and his co-star Colin Morgan, who plays Merlin, have become as much a part of BBC Saturday night television as Len Goodman and
Bruno Tonioli on Strictly Come Dancing, and they're now back for a fourth series of the wizarding drama, which is set to be the darkest yet.

"Effectively, our audience is growing up," says James, whose dark blond hair and heroic good looks have brought him many female fans over the years.

"People who were 12 when we first started are now 15. And 16-year-olds are coming to the end of their teens, so it allows you to push those boundaries and also to develop the characters. We're really just dipping a toe in the water of the darkness of the actual
Arthurian legend, because of our time slot.

"The legends are incredibly dark, quite twisted and messed up, so we're pushing to do justice to the stories."

The end of series three saw King Uther Pendragon's illegitimate daughter Morgana (Katie McGrath) crowned Queen of Camelot and then dethroned by Arthur and his army, while Uther (Anthony Head) lapsed into mental illness.

In series four, the Knights of Camelot become a fixture and Arthur starts acting more like the king he's destined to become.

"The eyes of the kingdom are looking to Arthur for everything. He's become the stand-in leader, while Uther hopefully sorts himself out," says James.

When Merlin first started, Arthur was the antithesis of a heroic noble king, explains James: "So the first four episodes are very big, because he's tested in that role and put under stressful situations any leader would have to face."

The actor's clearly delighted with the way his role's developed.

"When you're working on a show a few series in, the challenge is to keep it fresh. Bold scenes and storylines help do that."

James is chatting during a short break from filming in Cardiff, where he's having a rare day in the studio, and is as polite and courteous as you'd expect someone playing a knight to be.

"We've been all over the place. Yesterday we started in the studio, went to film in some forests around the corner and then made this dash an hour up the road to the Brecon Beacons."

The jousting and castle scenes are all shot on location in France, he explains, but for "safety reasons" James doesn't do any actual jousting - a fact which might disappoint some of his waiting fans.

"They seem to know our movements even better than we do," he jokes. "They turn up at a moment's notice."

Merlin has gained quite a big following across the pond and this summer, the cast flew to San Diego for the second year running, to attend pop culture convention Comic-Con.

Devon-born James was intrigued to see how American fans differ from those back home: "There's a lack of cynicism out there, they take their appreciation for that world very seriously.

"Over here, there's always a bit of holding yourself back, it's the British way."

Having attained pin-up status from the show, James has also become used to the odd fan moment: "There's one thing that's happened and I'm a little bit nervous of letting the story come out, just in case I encourage others to do it...

"What I will say is there have been quite a few strange moments in my life, created by the fact that I do a show called Merlin."

He's certainly recognised in the street more: "I get a lot of those 'did I go to school with you?' looks. It's all part of a very flattering element to the job, and it's very nice when people come and say they enjoy your work."

At Comic-Con it was announced the show had been recommissioned for a fifth series. James puts its continued success down to its careful reworking of the Arthurian legends.

"We can all relate to the morals of the story - it doesn't matter where you're from. What Arthur was trying to achieve and instil in his knights has inspired many people.

"What we've done is taken that material and told the story in a way that allows an audience to sit down on a Saturday night and escape." (с)

Bradley James, the heart-throb of the series, who plays the earnest young Prince Arthur, appears to ride like a skilled horseman but he isn’t – and it’s led to some hairy moments.

‘I was worried I might not get this role because I couldn’t really ride before I got the job,’ says Bradley, 27. ‘We turned up on set one day and I noticed one of the horses looking really crazy. I said to Colin, who was beside me as my servant Merlin, “I fear for the poor guy who’s going to get on that horse.” Then, to my horror, it was me!

‘In the first take, the horse bolted and took me galloping at immense speed through the woods. I ended up just hanging on for dear life. Luckily, I stayed in the saddle and was OK.’

Guinevere doesn’t tend to go out on the razz with the lads as much as maybe she’d like. I’m not too sure. It’s a bit of a boys’ group. I think if you had a girl to look after it wouldn’t be as much fun.

There’s a big Merlin set visit feature in the next issue of SFX, but not all of the interview quotes made it in there. So they’re here instead

SFX goes on the set of Merlin in issue 214 (out on 21 September) and the visit includes interviews with Bradley James (Arthur), Colin Morgan (Merlin), Katie McGrath (Morgana) and no less than three of the Knights of the Round Table. But not all the quotes fitted into the feature, so here’s an extended version of our chat with Bradley James.

We hear there’s a massive new green screen in the studio this year, to help the show look more epic?

“Yeah the big green box, or depending on whatever colour it is on that day. We’ve been using that quite a bit this year, actually. It’s been used as many forms of set. Usually we go out to a forest or an old decrepit building or whatever. A few times now, we’ve been able to stay indoors, control the weather and film stuff in this green box. What they tend to do is, the floor is real; whatever floor we need – grass or paving stone or whatever – they make for real. And then the rest of it tends to be stuff you have to put in your head. They tell you, ‘There’s a big turret over there,’ or, ‘there’s a burning building over there.’ And you get on it.”

Arthur is pretty much de facto ruler at the start of series four, isn’t he?

“Yeah, with Uther being mental and all that. From Arthur’s point of view, all eyes are now on him, looking for leadership. Certainly the first four episodes really challenge Arthur, and test him. If he comes through those tests well, then he will become the King Arthur we’re familiar with from the legends. The first four episodes certainly stress the stress factor on him. Is that even a term? It sounds like a dodgy ITV show. I’m coining that.”

Do you feel the show is still improving?

“This year more than any other year I’ve been happiest about. There are certain elements of this year that have made it a far more enjoyable experience. Not that it’s ever not been enjoyable but I’m more excited about this year. There are various reasons. I can only speak for up to episode nine, but that’s what we’ve shot so far, but up to episode nine I think every episode is going to be great. Usually by this time there’s one where I’ve gone, ‘Oooh, not so sure about that,’ but I think I can quite confidently say that up to episode nine I’m happy with all the episodes”

- Что можете рассказать нам о четвертом сезоне?
- Могу сказать, что от съемок четвертого сезона я получаю удовольствия больше, чем от всех предыдущих сезонов. Я буквально на луне от того, что мы уже сняли, и мне не терпится увидеть это в готовом виде. Никто из нас пока еще ничего не видел,так что я в этом вместе с фанатами, потому что сам стал фанатом.
- Артур уже принял на себя королевские обязаности?
- Практически он уже у власти, поскольку король Утер в некотором роде сидит, забившись в угол, и стенает, и народ не готов больше исполнять приказы безумца. Так что Артур поневоле обнаружил себя в ситуации, в которой вынужден взять на себя ответственность за королевство.
- И народ принимает Артура в этой роли?
- Я думаю, Артур всегда был в некотором роде любимцем Камелота. Он ведь постоянно отправлялся на какие-то ответственные задания, совершал героические поступки, и люди Камелота думали: " Да, мне нравится этот парень. Он только что убил очередного монстра ради меня".
- Нет ли других претендентов на власть?
- Мы еще не достигли демократии в Камелоте, так что у Артура нет большого количества конкурентов в борьбе за трон.
- Ему сейчас одиноко без Морганы?
- Совсем нет. И сейчас объясню, почему. У меня теперь завелись друзья, с которыми можно хорошо проводить время. У нас в городе теперь есть мои рыцари. Мы потихоньку их представляем публике. И мне это ужасно нравится, потому что теперь рядом со мной есть компания друзей, с которой здорово зажигать во время съемок, да и вне их. Артур теперь может общаться со своими рыцарями без необходимости слышать их ответы на французском. (Не поняла этого пассажа... )
- И какие теперь у него отношения с Мерлином?
- Я думаю, что Артура и Мерлина наконец-то действительно можно назвать лучшими друзьями, хотя они никогда в жизни в этом не признаются. Они через столько прошли вместе, что теперь связаны намертво. Как я уже сказал, они скорее всего никогда в этом не признаются - Артур-то уж точно нет, - но теперь то дурное настроение, которое раньше Артур срывал только на Мерлине, в какой-то степени распределено поровну между его рыцарями. А вообще что касается Артура... Мы все знаем великого короля из легенд, благородного героя, именно такой образ сразу же возникает в сознании, едва вы произносите эти два слова - король Артур. Это то, куда в конце концов должен прийти принц Артур, и вы увидите, что он уже туда идет.
- В прошлом сезоне отношения Артура и Гвен в некотором роде вышли наружу. Как они будут развиваться в этом?
- Я всегда говорил, что в случае с Артуром его первый выбор и гоавняа ответственность всегда был, есть и будет Камелот. Так что делая какой угодно выбор, он всегда в первую очередь думает о том, хорошо ли это для Камелота. И в его отношениях с Гвиневерой Камелот так же стоит на первом месте. Для Артура это всегда - Камелот. Для Гвен - Ланселот. И вот тут и начинается все самое интересное. И я уверен, что в том, как мы расскажем эту историю, фанаты найдут для себя самый главный интерес. Артур и Гвен - это не классическая история любви. Они не Ромео и Джульетта. Им судьбой было уготовано превратить эти отношения в полный бардак. И я точно не стал бы судить Артура по ним. Как герой он гораздо значительнее этих отношений. Как я уже говорил, его верность и преданность принадлежат Камелоту.
- Вы думаете, он готов бороться за свои отношения с другими персонажами, если будет казаться, что эти отношения под угрозой?
- Тут есть некоторые аспекты. Например, сколько бы бед и неприятностей Артуру не принес Мерлин, он всегда встанет на его защиту, всегда будет его оберегать. И он чертовски предан своему отцу, даже не смотря на то, что знает - Утер не святой и делал в своей жизни многое зла. Но Артур всегда уважал своего отца и всегда оставался на его стороне. Поэтому скажу так - отношения Артура с другими жестко связаны с отношением Артура к Камелоту - все, что хорошо для королевства, хорошо для Артура.
- То есть интересы королевства он ставит выше личных отношений?
- Думаю, что такое возможно. Что в основе его отношений лежит вопрос - а чем ты можешь быть полезен Камелоту? Готов ему служить? Тогда добро пожаловать на борт! Да, возможно, что в основе многих его отношений лежит именно брак по расчету.
- Моргана была Артуру как сестра. Он хоть немного по ней скучает?
- О, я фанат этой истории! Я на самом деле с нетерпением жду, когда они снова встретятся. Из этой точки все может пойти по любому направлению. Главный вопрос - по-прежнему ли в Артуре сохранилась привязанность к ней? Или же он в мгновение ока стал членом группировки анти-Моргана? Думаю, что того, что они выросли вместе, что вместе столько лет провели в Камелоте, он возможно все еще хочет ей помочь. Но то,что случится на самом деле, когда они встретятся, я пожалуй оставлю вашему воображению.
- Как отреагирует Артур на возвращение Ланселота?
- Возвращение Ланселота - это очень хорошо для Артура, потому что у него нет причин видеть в нем угрозу. Я не знаю, заметили вы или нет, но в Камелоте осталась только одна-единственная женщина, и ее Артур уже застолбил, пользуясь преимуществом своего положения. С другой женщиной Камелота Артур был связан родственными узами - ну или он так думал, поэтому постарался воспользоваться преимуществом, и я думаю, что все другие рыцари Камелота представляют для него точно такую же угрозу, как Ланселот.
Но вообще-то Ланселот - это потрясающая козырная карта, которую каждый хотел бы видеть в своей колоде. И королевству Артура повезло, что у него есть Ланселот.
- Они станут друзьями? По легенде Артур и Ланселот были действительно большими друзьями.
- Ну легенда в этом отношении весьма темная. Некоторые легенды утверждают, что Ланселот любил Артура, но поскольку не мог его получить, переключил внимание на Гвен как на единственную "часть" Артура, которая могла ему достаться. Но мы точно не свернем на эту тропку, потому что в Англии это всего лишь семь вечера в субботу, и для Англии - не знаю, как насчет Америки, правда, - это было бы немного слишком.
Артур и Ланселот всегда очень уважали друг друга, Артур весьма ценил Ланселота, его как личность, его таланты и способности, и думаю, что счастлив иметь его в своем окружении.
- Будет ли Артур искать советов у своих рыцарей - вместо Мерлина, который до этого всегда был его доверенным лицом?
- Думаю, что Мерлин всегда будет иметь право голоса, особенно вте моменты, когда Артур будет ощущать себя уязвимым и неуверенным в решениях, которые принимает. В таких ситуациях Мерлин всегда рядом. И для Артура сейчас самое важное - научиться принимать решения самостоятельно. И он начинает этому учитсья. Он в большей степени становится королем, уверенным в себе, своих силах и своих решениях. Его же рыцари в некотором роде встают рядом с ним, вращая мечами, и выглядят при этом дико круто. Они здорово умеют это делать!
- Увидим ли мы больше уважения к Мерлину со стороны Артура?
- Что? Нет! Еще чего не хватало! С какой стати?
Мерлин же просто доит его. Давайте признаем - Артур далеко не такая задница, как о нем думают люди. Он терпит Мерлина! Он же святой.
И опять-таки - дружба Артура и Мерлина никуда не девалась. Но их отношения не были бы такими сочными, если бы из них исчезли постоянные препирательства и шпильки. И если честно - прежде, чем они зайдут дальше, Мерлину предстоит сделать несколько шагов вверх. Ну например - Мерлин до сих пор ходит в той же одежде, в которой пришел в Камелот, что во много определяет статус - он все еще крестьянин. В этом обществе одежда - штука очень важная!
